Tread Perilously

Dec 10, 2020

Tread Merrily's Christmas Carol continues with the Bewitched episode "Humbug Not To Be Spoken Here."

When Darren blows up at a client for trying to make him work on Christmas Eve Day, Samantha decides to call upon her old friend Santa for help. But in a surprising twist, it's not Darren who needs a refresher on Christmas Cheer. Instead, Sam and Santa visit the client, a powdered soup mix magnate, to remind him of the true meaning of the day. He also discovers his manservant can experience joy despite being poor.

Justin and Erik lose their minds thanks to the soup mix angle. They discuss the two Darrens, but are more surprised by the character standing up for himself in this episode. Elizabeth Montgomery's round of Secret Mexican has a surprising result. Or is it not so surprising? The "my wife is a witch" metaphor also leads to some interesting thoughts about masculinity in the 1960s. Walt Disney's plan for EPCOT gets critiqued. Tread Perilously reiterates its complicated feelings about anime. The Crow is declared the perfect Gen X film. Erik once again proves he watched an appalling amount of television as a child and Suzie Bruisey proves to be the worst possible Christmas gift.
